About coffeeka

I write about Japan from the inside — as a Tokyo-based Japanese person who spent part of my childhood in Germany, learning to see my own culture from the outside.

That distance sharpened my sight. Japan’s depth isn’t just in its food or temples. It’s in the care of small rituals, the silence that holds meaning, the things easy to miss if you’re only looking for the obvious.

Why I Write

As AI-generated content reshapes how Japan is understood abroad, misinformation spreads faster than ever. Some of it romanticized. Some simply wrong. I write to offer an honest, grounded view — for people who want to go deeper.

About the Name

The name came from a plant. When I first tried growing things at home, I killed them all — mint, rosemary, thyme, the easy ones. The only survivor was a coffee tree (コーヒーノキ), the so-called difficult one.

Why “coffeeka”

Paired with fika — the Nordic word for a moment of rest over coffee — coffeeka became the name. A reminder that resilience and rest can coexist.

The Logo

The logo is a photograph I took of that same coffee tree when I started this company. A reminder that growth is slow, and beginnings are worth keeping.
